“It is amazing how much love and laughter they bring into our lives and even how much closer we become with each other because of them.” – John Grogan (Author, Marley & Me)
Ask other people you know with dogs, or search for success stories of CBD use with dogs, and you may be surprised at what you find. CBD has been found to help dogs with more issues than we originally thought.
The American Kennel Club has been talking about CBD and shares stories on their website about how CBD has helped dogs.
- Topper, a 7-year-old Ibizan Hound, could hardly walk after being diagnosed with severe arthritic changes due to Valley fever. “The pain became so debilitating he had to be carried outside to eat, drink, or use the bathroom,” recalls owner Christy Moore. “He was on pain medication but it wasn’t working. A friend recommended pet CBD. Within three days he could walk on all four legs and I was crying tears of joy. It was the miracle we needed.”
- Lady Amelthia, a Greyhound, was so petrified of thunderstorms she would destroy a crate to escape. “Holding her only made her claw to get away. A ThunderShirt reduced her from 100 to 90 on the anxiety scale,” recalls owner Jenn Boswell, director of the Alabama Greyhound Adoption Center. “Veterinary-prescribed trazodone took it down to a 50. Tried three drops of CBD oil and it went down to a 5.
STUDIES ON CBD OIL USE FOR DOGS
It’s disheartening when our pets suffer and when the only option is medication with side effects, or medication that doesn’t really help. CBD has been found to help with more issues than we originally thought, like: anxiety, pain, seizures and epilepsy, allergies, skin problems, cancer, severe arthritis & joint problems.
And although there are many informal positive stories from dog owners and veterinarians, there are now more formal scientific studies, supporting the notion that CBD really works…
In a recent study, “results showed that CBD significantly reduced canine cancer cell proliferation uniformly”. [A Promising Study on the Impact of CBD on Canine Cancer.] Unofficial reports from veterinarians have claimed CBD shrunk cancer cells or put dogs into remission.
Another study suggests that CBD may help dogs with canine osteoarthritis an inflammatory condition that causes pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility– effecting least 20% of all dogs older than 1 year old, with higher risk for older dogs. [CBD For Dogs? New Research Backs Canine Cannabis Use For Osteoarthritis]
In a formal study on the “Effect of Cannabidiol (CBD) on Canine Inflammatory Response” published in the National Library of Medicine, the results of the study demonstrated the anti-inflammatory and positive immune system properties of CBD directly in dogs’ immune cells.
Is it Safe to Give Dogs CBD products?
We know CBD works hearing from other dog owners and veterinarians that have shared stories, and by verifying research on studies that have proven it works, but it’s important to know the risks.
Too much CBD, or CBD with high levels of THC can be toxic or even deadly. Side effects of using CBD could be diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, lowered blood pressure, or drowsiness.
There are a few guidelines to consider when giving your dogs CBD:
- Talk to your veterinarian - Especially if your dog is on other medication.
- Know what’s in it and the source of the CBD product you’re using.
- Make sure the CBD you give your dog has no or low THC.
- Pay attention to dosage and start low.
- A consistent wellness routine is essential for effectiveness.
So the answer is Yes, CBD is safe for dogs when you know the risks and follow the guidelines.
