“That is not a drug. It’s a leaf.” – Arnold Schwarzenegger
CBD has become a buzz word lately, even though its been around since 1940 when it was first discovered by Roger Adams.
Athletes like Arnold Schwarzenegger have spoken about the benefits they’ve experienced from it, but there is more research that still needs to be done. Here’s what we know about using CDB with exercise…
What is CBD and can be used as a supplement?
Cannabidiol is a compound found in the Sativa species of Cannabis, commonly known as CBD. While this compound is derived from cannabis, it is sourced from the Hemp strain of this species which does not offer any psychoactive effects.
Traces of Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, are less than 0.3% in hemp-derived CBD.
While THC offers the “high” feeling, CBD provides therapeutic results.
CBD can be used as an added dietary supplement to manage pain, inflammation, injury recovery, mood and anxiety disorders; as well as provide essential nutrients.
What (if any) are the risks of using CBD for exercise?
While you learn more about the benefits of CBD when you add it to your exercise routine, knowing the risks are just as important.
RISK: Dosage isn’t the same for every body– Read more on dosage here.
While CBD is a great natural alternative to prescription medicines, it is not a “one size fits all” product. Everyone’s body regulates a bit differently.
👉 It is important to remember to start with a low dose and increase as needed.
Some people have a fast metabolism and may not experience the same results with the dosage that works wonders for someone else. Remember to listen to what your body is telling you or consult with a doctor about the dose that offers the best results for you.
RISK: Health professionals also caution that the CBD industry is not well-regulated. It’s difficult to know if what you’re purchasing has the amount of CBD it says it has, or if it’s mixed with harmful substances such as heavy metals and pesticides for example.
👉 It’s important to know the source, know your farmer.
RISK: It is unclear whether CBD interferes with other medications. If you are taking other medications, be sure to do your research and speak to your doctor about the possibility of negative interactions.
👉 It’s important to consider what you’re ingesting and if it plays well with CBD.
